Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates host the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, with first pitch set for 12:35 PM ET. Jared Jones gets the ball for Pittsburgh, squaring off against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez in a midseason matinee that gives the Bucs a chance to add to their home record in front of what figures to be a strong afternoon crowd along the Allegheny. With the calendar deep into July, every game carries genuine playoff-race weight, and this one against a dangerous Arizona lineup is no exception.

Pitching Matchup: Jared Jones vs. Eduardo Rodriguez

Jones is the centerpiece of this preview and rightfully so. The young Pirates right-hander has been one of the more compelling arms in the National League, and his performances at PNC Park have given the Pittsburgh fanbase real reasons to believe in the rotation's future. He draws a tough assignment against an Arizona lineup that features legitimate middle-of-the-order threats, but Jones has shown he can handle high-profile matchups.

Rodriguez takes the hill for the Diamondbacks. The veteran left-hander has bounced around the league and brings experience and pitch variety that will challenge the Pittsburgh lineup from the jump. Left-handed starters historically create some complications for this Pirates lineup, so how the Bucs adjust early will set the tone for the afternoon.

Keys to Watch in Pirates vs. Diamondbacks

Bryan Reynolds and the Middle of the Pittsburgh Order

Reynolds hitting third puts him in position to do the most damage against Rodriguez early. If Gonzales and Lowe can work counts and get on base at the top, Reynolds and Valdez behind him have the opportunity to put crooked numbers on the board before Arizona's bullpen enters the picture. Esmerlyn Valdez in the cleanup spot is a notable card — how he performs against a veteran lefty will be worth monitoring.

Containing Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte

Arizona's lineup is genuinely dangerous at the top and in the middle. Carroll is one of the better table-setters in the National League, and Ketel Marte hitting fourth as the DH gives Arizona a consistent run-producing threat. Jones will need to keep Carroll off the bases early and work carefully around Marte in high-leverage situations. Nolan Arenado at six adds further depth to an already formidable order.

Henry Davis Behind the Plate

Davis catching Jones is a pairing worth watching closely. The former top prospect's ability to frame pitches and manage Jones's arsenal against a disciplined Arizona lineup could be a quiet difference-maker in a close game.

Prediction

This is a quality matchup on paper. Jones at home against a competitive opponent is the kind of start that defines stretches of the Pirates' season. Pittsburgh's lineup will need to manufacture something early against Rodriguez before the veteran settles in. Expect a tight, low-scoring game that comes down to bullpen management in the seventh and eighth innings. Give the edge to the Pirates at home — Jones is good enough to keep Arizona in check long enough for the Pittsburgh offense to find a way. Pirates 3, Diamondbacks 2.
